Responsible Waste Management: Understanding and Handling Hazardous Materials Safely

Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste demands careful management to ensure the safety of both people and the environment. Unlike general household rubbish, hazardous waste cannot simply be disposed of in standard landfill sites. It requires specialised handling and disposal methods to prevent harm. But identifying hazardous waste isn’t always straightforward. Let’s delve into what constitutes hazardous waste and how to handle it responsibly.

Recognizing Hazardous Waste
Some types of hazardous waste are obvious, such as chemicals, old car batteries, pesticides, oils, and fluorescent light tubes. However, others may not be as immediately recognisable. Take plasterboard, for example. While it’s a common building material found in many homes, when it gets wet, it releases toxic hydrogen sulphide. Thus, it’s crucial to handle and dispose of plasterboard separately to mitigate potential harm. If you need to dispose of plasterboard in your skip, you must let us know in advance and bag it separately.

Dealing with Asbestos
Asbestos, a notorious hazard, can lurk in unexpected places like old Artex ceilings. Disturbing asbestos without proper precautions can pose serious health risks. If you encounter asbestos during renovations or clear-outs, it’s essential to handle it with extreme caution. Although we at Wellington Waste aren’t licensed to handle asbestos directly, we can provide skips to transport it from your site to a specialist landfill facility. However, please note that we cannot store asbestos at our site, even temporarily.

Responsible Waste Management

At Wellington Waste, we prioritise responsible waste management. While we may not be licensed for hazardous waste disposal, we can advise you on safe handling practices and provide suitable skips for transporting materials like plasterboard and asbestos. It’s crucial to consult with us before disposing of any potentially hazardous materials to ensure they’re managed appropriately.
