Hiring a skip isn’t something you do all that often. So when you do, you want to make sure you get the best value you can. This doesn’t just mean shopping around for prices, it’s just as important to be organized and fully ready for when the skip is delivered.
Here are a few suggestions that will help you get the most value when you next decide to hire a skip.
Sort out what you want to get rid of beforehand. This will help make sure you order the right size of skip (see our skip size guide) and reduce the amount of time you need to hire it for. It’s much cheaper to hire one large skip than find you have to hire another later on because you misjudged how much stuff you had to get rid of.
Assessing the quantity of waste accurately will also avoid possible charges for overfilling or finding that your skip driver is unable to take the skip away until some of the waste has been unloaded. Waste should never be stacked above the top of the skip.
Think about whether you can hire a bigger skip and share the cost with a neighbour. But make sure you can trust them not to put any hazardous or unapproved waste in as this can also get expensive.
Aim to have the skip off the road if you can so that you don’t need to pay for a council road permit for which the council will also require 10 working days’ notice. Make sure your drive is clear and, if necessary, protected by wooden planks before the skip driver arrives.
Break up bulky waste so you can fit more in and avoid overfilling.
Use a reputable licensed company that you can trust to dispose of your waste correctly. You are responsible for where your waste ends up and the fines can be high.
